Distinguished Achievement Awards
American Epilepsy Society Award Descriptions
The following three awards are presented by the American Epilepsy Society at the Annual Meeting and Conference. The 2009 Annual Meeting is scheduled for December 4-8, 2009 in Boston, MA.
William G. Lennox Award
This award was established in 1966 to recognize members of the society, usually at a senior level, who have a record of lifetime contributions and accomplishments related to epilepsy. This award is funded by the William G. Lennox Trust Fund established in 1962 to advance and disseminate knowledge concerning epilepsy in all of its aspects — biological, clinical and social, and to promote better care and treatment for persons with epilepsy. The award need not be given every year (depending on the committee's assessment of the suitability of available candidates). Submission deadline – June 1, 2009.

Awardee receives a $10,000 honorarium, one night lodging at the annual conference, round trip economy airfare, and free Scientific Program registration. In addition the award winner is highlighted in the Conference Program Book.
AES Service Award
Established in 1993, this award is presented annually to a member of the American Epilepsy Society. The award recognizes outstanding service in the field of epilepsy (including non-educational and non-scientific) and exemplary contributions to the welfare of the American Epilepsy Society and its members. Submission deadline – August 3, 2009.
Awardee receives a $1,000 honorarium plus round trip economy airfare, one night lodging for annual conference, reimbursement of per diem expenses, and free Scientific Program registration. In addition, the award winner is highlighted in the Conference Program Book.
J. Kiffin Penry Excellence in Epilepsy Care Award
This award, funded by Abbott Laboratories, was established 1997. The winner need not be an AES member even though the award is presented at the AES Annual Meeting. The reward honors Dr. Penry’s lifelong focus on and genuine concern for the patient with epilepsy. The Penry Award recognizes those whose work has had a major impact on patient care and improved the quality of life for persons with epilepsy as well as recognizing excellence in the care of persons with epilepsy. Submission deadline – August 3, 2009.

International Award Descriptions
The following two awards are given once every two years by the International League Against Epilepsy and the International Bureau for Epilepsy. The next round of awards nominations will occur in 2008. The awards presentation ceremony is held at the International Epilepsy Congress in Budapest. Suggested nominations for consideration by the AES Board are due August 1, 2008. Nominees can be proposed by one of the member organizations of IBE or ILAE and are elected by the Executive Committees of IBE and ILAE. Proposed nominees from the previous election, who did not receive the award, will automatically be considered a nominee for one following election.
