What other kinds of conditions can mimic symptoms of epilepsy?

People with traumatic brain injury can have changes in personality or behavior caused by the injury. If these changes tend to come and go, they could look like seizures, or more likely, if they were caused by seizures, they would be mistaken for the effects of the injury. Since seizures can be treated, it is important to identify the origin of these changes. Similarly, people with brain injury, especially from battlefield wounds, may suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder. This can cause personality changes, behavior changes and memory problems, all things that can be seen with epilepsy also. This is why it is so important for returning soldiers who have experienced brain injury to receive the best possible care. It may take very advanced diagnostic techniques to determine why some of these symptoms are occurring and how best to treat them.
